How does the VAT calculator work?
Enter an amount, choose the tax rate (19%, 7%, or 0%), and set the direction: from net to gross or from gross to net. The VAT calculator instantly shows all three values – the net amount, the tax amount, and the gross amount.
Everything happens live in your browser as you type. There is no waiting, no signup, and no hidden steps. Results appear automatically in the German number format, for example 1.190,00 €.
Convert net to gross (adding VAT)
If you know the net amount and need the gross amount including VAT, the calculator adds the chosen tax rate. The formula is: Gross = Net × (1 + rate/100).
Example at 19%: 100,00 € net × 1.19 = 119,00 € gross, of which 19,00 € is VAT.
Example at 7%: 100,00 € net × 1.07 = 107,00 € gross, of which 7,00 € is VAT. The reduced 7% rate applies to items such as groceries, books, newspapers, and local public transport.
Extract VAT: convert gross to net
Do you have a gross amount and want to extract the VAT it contains? That is exactly what the "extract VAT" mode is for. The formula: Net = Gross × 100 / (100 + rate), and VAT = Gross − Net.
Example at 19%: 119,00 € gross × 100 / 119 = 100,00 € net, so 19,00 € of included VAT.
Example at 7%: 107,00 € gross × 100 / 107 = 100,00 € net, so 7,00 € of included VAT. This lets you see at a glance how much tax is built into a price.
Which tax rates apply in 2026?
In Germany there are three relevant cases, all of which the VAT calculator covers:
- 19% – standard rate: the default for most goods and services, including meals eaten in a restaurant and, as a rule, beverages.
- 7% – reduced rate: for items such as groceries, books and e-books, newspapers and magazines, hotel stays, admission tickets to theatre, concerts and museums, and local public transport.
- 0% / tax-exempt: for certain tax-free transactions.
Note: the earlier reduced 7% rate on restaurant meals expired on 31 December 2023; meals eaten on-site have been taxed at 19% again since then. This way you always pick the right rate without searching for long.
Free, instant, and GDPR-compliant
The VAT calculator is completely free and ready to use immediately – no registration. You type in an amount and get the result in real time.
Your data stays protected: hosting is in Germany and operation is GDPR-compliant. You do not enter any personal details to calculate. Amounts are shown in the familiar German format with a thousands separator and a decimal comma, for example 1.234,56 €.
From the calculator straight to an invoice

Mandatory details such as the sequential invoice number, the date of supply (Leistungsdatum), the net amount broken down by tax rate, and the tax rate and tax amount are cleanly itemised. Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate VAT from a gross amount?
Divide the gross amount by (100 + tax rate) and multiply by 100 to get the net amount. The difference is the VAT. At 19%: 119,00 € × 100 / 119 = 100,00 € net, so 19,00 € VAT. The VAT calculator does this automatically for you.
How do I convert net to gross?
Multiply the net amount by (1 + tax rate/100). At 19%, 100,00 € net × 1.19 = 119,00 € gross. At 7%, 100,00 € net × 1.07 = 107,00 € gross. The calculator instantly shows net, gross, and the tax amount.
When does 7% apply instead of 19% VAT?
The reduced 7% rate applies to items such as groceries, books and e-books, newspapers, hotel stays, admission tickets, and local public transport. The standard 19% rate is the default for most goods and services, including meals eaten on-site in a restaurant (the temporary 7% rate ended at the close of 2023).
Is the VAT calculator free?
Yes, the VAT calculator is completely free and usable without signup. You can run as many calculations as you like, convert net to gross, or extract the VAT. The invoice generator for § 14 UStG-compliant PDF invoices is also available free of charge.
How much VAT is in 100 €?
It depends on the tax rate. At 119,00 € gross with 19%, the included VAT is 19,00 € and the net amount is 100,00 €. For a gross amount of 100,00 € with 19%, the included VAT is about 15,97 € and the net is 84,03 €. The calculator computes both directions exactly.
Is my data safe when calculating?
Yes. The VAT calculator is hosted in Germany and operated in a GDPR-compliant way. You do not need to enter any personal data to perform a calculation. The calculation runs directly in your browser, so you can work quickly and in a privacy-friendly manner.
What is the standard VAT rate in 2026?
The standard VAT rate in Germany in 2026 remains 19%. The reduced rate is 7%. In addition, there are tax-free transactions at 0%. The VAT calculator covers all three cases, so you can choose the right rate for every business transaction.
