Leitweg-ID: meaning, structure and where to find it
In short
The Leitweg-ID is an identifier that routes an e-invoice to the correct public authority. It is mandatory for invoices to public-sector clients (B2G) and sits in the XRechnung buyer reference field (BT-10). The client gives you the value. The Leitweg-ID consists of a coarse address, an optional fine address and a two-digit check number.
What is the Leitweg-ID?
The Leitweg-ID is a unique identifier that routes an electronic invoice to the responsible office within a public authority. It was introduced with e-invoicing in public procurement and is mandatory for invoices to public-sector clients (B2G).
Think of it as a postcode for invoices: it makes sure the invoice lands in the right inbox.
How is the Leitweg-ID structured?
The Leitweg-ID consists of several parts, separated by hyphens:
- Coarse address – identifies the higher-level office
- Fine address – optional, for a more precise routing
- Check digits – two digits for validation
A schematic example looks like this: 04011000-1234512345-06. You do not assign the value yourself; the public-sector client does.
Where do I find my Leitweg-ID?
You get the Leitweg-ID from your client, the authority. It is usually stated in the order, the contract or the assignment documents. If it is missing, ask the office directly.
Do not confuse the Leitweg-ID with your customer or order number – it is a separate, technical identifier.
The Leitweg-ID in the XRechnung (BT-10)
In an XRechnung the Leitweg-ID sits in the buyer reference field, technically BT-10. For public-sector invoices this field is mandatory.
To see whether an invoice contains a valid Leitweg-ID, use the free e-invoice viewer: it shows the buyer reference of any XRechnung in plain text.
Do I need a Leitweg-ID for B2B invoices?
No. The Leitweg-ID is meant for invoices to public authorities (B2G). For normal business-to-business (B2B) invoices it is not required. You can write a B2B invoice without a Leitweg-ID.
